Bifacial products have long been commercially available in the solar industry. In North America, Sanyo was the first to commercialize bifacial technology with the introduction of their HIT Double bifacial module in 2006.
Due to cost and lack of industry infrastructure such as standards and modeling tools, the technology did not receive much interest.
However, with recent reductions in module pricing and the ability to produce bifacial products at costs only incrementally higher than standard PV modules, the industry is giving bifacial modules renewed attention.
