Natural Power at 30

Celebrating 30 years of Natural Power

Founded in Glasgow 30 years ago this month, Natural Power has grown into a global business while maintaining a strong Scottish footprint. We’re proud of the history that we’ve not only been part of, but also created, throughout the past three decades. Whilst we look forward to what’s ahead, we’ve also been reflecting on the key milestones that made us the business and team we are today!

From playing a crucial role in connecting Scotland’s first onshore wind farm in 1996 to supporting Europe’s largest solar project in 2021, opening our first US office in 2010 (now one of three!), acquiring businesses throughout the world, and innovating new technology in-house that has helped the renewable energy industry evolve, we hope you enjoy having a look back over our history here.

And as we celebrate our 30th anniversary in helping to drive the clean energy transition, we’re growing stronger than ever with our mid-year turnover up 16% compared to this time last year. The increase is fuelled by growth across our environmental and advisory consultancy services, with the UK market leading the charge - particularly in onshore wind and battery storage projects.

In January this year, we opened a new 5,900 sq ft office in Glasgow city centre, doubling our desk space to support the growing headcount and better serve our client base in and around the city.

Then, in May, we officially launched the UK’s largest independent renewable energy control room at our global headquarters near Castle Douglas. Known as the ControlCentre, the state-of-the-art facility now manages 11.5GW of renewable energy capacity, supporting 35% of the UK’s onshore wind, overseeing 4.1GW of offshore and OFTO assets, and managing 20% of UK battery storage.

Ciaran Farrell, our Managing Director, said: “2025 marked a year of major progress for Natural Power. We’ve strengthened our operational capabilities, invested in our people, and continued to support clients across the renewables landscape as they scale up for a net-zero future. Opening the expanded ControlCentre and our new Glasgow hub during our 30th year reflects both where we’ve come from and where we’re heading.”

Looking ahead, we expect continued growth by diversifying across technologies and geographies, particularly in grid services, while reinforcing our commitment to safety, compliance and innovation.

However, sector-wide challenges persist, including energy policy uncertainty, regulatory shifts, exchange rate risks, and the ongoing competition for talent. “As we grow, so too must our focus on attracting and retaining skilled people,” added Ciaran. “We have the potential to lead globally in clean energy innovation, but we need consistent policy and investment to unlock that future.”

He added: “With ambitious national and global targets in place, the demand for expert, trusted support has never been greater. Natural Power is uniquely positioned to help clients seize these opportunities. From accelerating project delivery to integrating new technologies, I’m excited to lead the business into this next chapter of growth, driving impact across every corner of the energy transition.”

As we celebrate 30 years of Natural Power, we’re proud of how far we’ve come — from our roots in Scotland to becoming a trusted global partner in renewables. With a strong team, ambitious vision and unwavering commitment to the energy transition, we’ve only just got started, and we’re ready for the next chapter!
