life at natural power

John Hannigan

Project manager

When did you join Natural Power?

I joined Natural Power in August 2024.

Can you tell us more about your role? (Mention OE)

I work as a Project Manager within the Irish construction team fulfilling the role as Owner’s Engineer. It involves management of all the aspects of a project, from the tender process through design/construction, energisation and handover. At the moment, most of my time is spent engaging with the client and contractors during the build of the Monvallet Solar Farm in County Louth. I deal with items such as quality, progress, health & safety, contractor engagement and commercials.

Why did you want to join the renewable energy industry?

Coming from an agricultural background I have a keen interest in the climate and the effects it has on farming practices. I’m also very active outdoors, be it hiking or running, so I appreciate nature and all it offers and understand the importance of protecting it as best we can. I believe these are the core reasons for me joining the renewable industry.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

I find trying to keep up with the ever-changing renewable technologies can be a challenge. Every day is a school day as they say!

What is your favourite aspect of renewables?

My favourite aspect of renewables is the global working platform it gives you. I enjoy working with people from different backgrounds, it gives you a different perspective on things and keeps you challenging the status quo!

What has been your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement in renewables so far was managing the first ever BESS project in Northern Ireland. I was involved from the beginning to handover. It gave me a great insight into the technology and a firm footing to further my knowledge.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.

I have a keen interest in motorsport, specifically motorcycles. I spend many a Sunday touring the coastline of Ireland on mine. I have plans in the near future to see Scotland and further afield in the same way.
