We were pleased to support Alpiq with technical due diligence for its acquisition of a majority stake in Harmony Energy, a pan-European developer and operator of battery energy storage systems (BESS). The transaction strengthens Alpiq’s position in flexible, low-carbon energy infrastructure and brings together a development platform and multi-gigawatt pipeline across key European markets.
As technical advisor to Alpiq, we carried out detailed technical due diligence across a diverse portfolio of battery storage projects in the UK, France, Germany and Poland. Our work covered both operational and development-stage assets, giving Alpiq an independent view of the portfolio’s technical quality, delivery risks and long-term viability.
The portfolio includes battery storage projects at different stages of maturity, from assets already under construction to shovel-ready developments and advanced-stage opportunities. We assessed the maturity of each project and assigned a probability of successful delivery, helping Alpiq build a robust technical understanding of the portfolio as part of its investment decision.
Our review considered project design, technology selection and delivery readiness, as well as the differing regulatory frameworks, grid connection requirements and market conditions across four European countries. Combining local market knowledge with a consistent assessment approach allowed us to provide a clear, comparable view of opportunities and risks across the portfolio.
Julien Teixeira, Senior Technical Advisor – BESS at Natural Power France, said: “This was a highly rewarding project to lead, bringing together our battery storage expertise with our experience of delivering technical due diligence across multiple European markets. The portfolio includes projects at very different stages of maturity, from assets already under construction through to advanced development opportunities, so understanding the technical readiness and probability of success of each project was critical to supporting Alpiq’s investment decision.
“One of the key challenges was assessing projects across four different countries, each with its own regulatory landscape, grid requirements and development considerations. By combining our local market knowledge with a consistent technical assessment methodology, we were able to provide Alpiq with a clear understanding of both the opportunities and the associated risks across the portfolio.”
Our multidisciplinary team worked closely with Alpiq throughout the transaction, bringing together battery storage, engineering, grid, development and market expertise to support due diligence across the portfolio. The work reflects our growing role in Europe’s rapidly expanding battery storage sector, where investors and developers need experienced technical advisors who can evaluate complex, cross-border energy infrastructure projects.
With extensive experience supporting renewable energy and energy storage developments throughout Europe, we help investors, developers and asset owners make informed decisions that support the successful delivery of the energy transition. Find out more here: Energy Storage
