Grid connection is often one of the most critical dependencies for renewable energy, battery storage, industrial and large-scale development projects. Using an Independent Connection Provider (ICP) for eligible work can give developers greater control over programme, cost and procurement, while creating opportunities to accelerate delivery and protect the project’s commercial milestones.
An ICP can deliver many of the contestable elements of a new connection, including design, equipment procurement, site preparation, cabling, substations and certain reinforcement works. This introduces competition and delivery flexibility, helping clients test the market, select the right delivery partners and align the connection programme more closely with wider project construction.
Protecting the programme from supply-chain pressures
That flexibility is particularly valuable when long lead times, constrained manufacturing capacity or late equipment deliveries threaten the energisation date. Natural Power can identify procurement risks early, review equipment specifications and lead times, assess supplier proposals and advise on technically compliant alternatives. By considering substitute equipment, alternative cable or substation configurations, phased delivery, or changes to the procurement sequence before commitments are locked in, clients can reduce exposure to delay, avoid unnecessary redesign and maintain momentum without compromising safety, quality or the adopting network operator’s requirements.
Understanding contestable and non-contestable work
Contestable work can generally be undertaken by an accredited provider and commonly includes connection design, procurement, trenching, network extensions, cable installation and construction. Non-contestable work remains with the host network operator and typically includes determining the point of connection, approving designs, completing certain reinforcement works, and carrying out final testing, connection and energisation. Understanding that division at the outset allows the programme to be structured around activities the client can influence, while critical network-operator interfaces and dependencies are identified and managed early. The split between contestable/non contestable and customer works can also be optimised to reduce risks and cost. Some works identified as contestable may be more cost effective left in the non-contestable pot, for example small lengths of cable. Natural Power’s wide-ranging expertise allows us to understand the optimal split for your project.
Independent support focused on your priorities
Natural Power provides independent procurement and Owner’s Engineer support from connection strategy through to energisation. We can define and coordinate scopes, support competitive procurement, review and assure designs, challenge contractor and supplier proposals, monitor construction, oversee commissioning and manage the evidence required for adoption. This gives clients a clear view of cost, programme and interface risk, with objective technical advice to support timely decisions.
By engaging with the Natural Power team you will gain greater control over delivery, earlier visibility of emerging risks, stronger procurement choices and practical mitigation when equipment, suppliers or network-operator activities threaten the connection date. By acting as the owner’s independent technical representative, Natural Power helps safeguard project value, manage interfaces and ensure the connection is designed, built and commissioned in line with the client’s long-term objectives.
The technical support the Natural Power team provided on our portfolio of solar schemes was crucial to help progress through the pre-construction stage. Their technical expertise and knowledge was key in the selection of key contracts and they provided an excellent service, taking into account our specific requirements.
